Product Description

The Sharp Plasmacluster™ Ion Air Purifier with True HEPA Filter effectively reduces pollen, dust, pet dander, smoke, germs, bacteria, viruses, odors, mold, and fungus in your living space. There is a three-stage filter system including a permanent micro-mesh pre-filter, activated carbon filter, and long-life True HEPA filter, which captures 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns from the air that passes through it. Patented Plasmacluster Ion Technology disperses positively and negatively charged ions throughout the room to safely break down microorganisms and odors (even those trapped in fabric, carpeting, and drapery!). It is an ideal solution for allergy sufferers, asthmatics, pet owners, and smokers, and best used in a bedroom, living room, study, or exercise room. There are 3 manual fan speeds. The unit has LibraryQuiet™ operation (as quiet as 29 decibels, or the sound of rustling leaves) and is ENERGY STAR® rated, so you can run the unit continuously while saving money and energy.

2Needs periodic maintenance. Long-term concerns
By MCC
The filters need to be cleaned twice a week to maintain airflow. If I forget to do so the unit slows to a trickle and makes loud wind-tunnel like noises. Think driving down the highway in a car with poor door seals.I've added another prefilter layer to extend the life of the replaceable filters. I purchased a 16" x 48" sheet of "Cut-to-fit Carbon for Air Purifiers" on Amazon and cut a replacement every few months. It neatly sandwiches between the back cover and the real prefilter and stays pulled to the filter stack from the airflow. The reduction in airflow from this added layer is almost negligible and it catches a good amount of dust.To clean, I take the back, cut-to-fit carbon, official prefilter (thin!), and HEPA outside. The first three I shake liberally. The official prefilter holds *much* more dust than you'd think it could. The HEPA I hold with one hand on the filter media and then repeatedly slap the other side with my free hand.I just performed this cleaning after putting it off for a month and the airflow seems to have more than quintupled. The "Plasmacluster" feature seems to help reduce odors and doesn't make the room smell like ozone. I use it on an as-needed basis to extend its life. It generates an electric arc within the purifier and I can't imagine the strike plates holding up to years of continuous use.Overall, I'm happy with this purchase. Just don't expect it to sit there and perform at 100% for the two years between filter replacements. It remains to be seen if it can actually go that long.Replacement filters are $80 at the time of writing- entirely acceptable for a filter with this CADR.---UPDATE---I'm concerned about the lifetime of the Plasmacluster unit. Sharp's dedicated Plasmacluster products place a limit on its lifetime and offer a replacement module. No such replacement seems to exist for the FP-A40UW. I've disassembled my unit and found that the electrode module is removable although probably not intended to be user-serviceable. Sharp's web presence glosses over that issue. This lack of transparency is troubling. How am I supposed to know if the FP-A40U-W will work as advertised just two years after purchase? What can be done to restore it to full working order when the Plasmacluster unit inevitably wears out? I've sent an email to Sharp asking these questions, I'll post their response (if any).Until then, I'm knocking a star off of my review.--SECOND UPDATE--This is Sharp's official response:"I would be happy to assist. Please know that any general maitenence (sp) on this product would need to be done by an authorized service center. This would include anything beyond replacing general filters on the unit. There is not a true way to tell how long the unit will last as every environment is different. I hope this information helps."And, when asked about cost:"I am very sorry for the inconvenience. The part that you are requesting would not be considered a optional accessory this would be something mainly available to service centers for if an issue of replacement did arise. I would recommend contacting our parts distributors for further assistance in locating a price or the part. I have listed them below for your convenience."So it seems as though this product is designed for a lifetime of a few years before it has to be sent in for service or replaced. The HEPA will still function but the Plasmacluster feature could die at an unknown time and it's not clear how I would know. This is why their website glosses over the issue- Sharp knows it's a problem but they seem to just want to push units out the door. There's no excuse for not making a part with such a limited lifespan replaceable by the user when other products from the same company have that feature.I've modified my rating once again to reflect this. I don't like being sold products that are designed to work at 100% for only a few years.

5AMAZING AIR PURIFIER
By Cronopio
This air purifier is amazing, although I paid only $108 from Beach Audio, it may still be worth the $200 Amazon charges. The unit itself is relatively small looks great, so it won't seem out of place even in your living room (I have two units, one in the living room and another in the bedroom to protect my newborn). Built quality is amazing.Despite what other reviewers say, the Sharp is extremely quiet in the lowest setting, so much so that I always forget to turn it off when I leave home. Which is not a problem because it is very thrifty in terms of electricity consumption. The Plasma Cluster function is a bit noisier, but not annoyingly so, you get accustomed to it in no time.Even though I am by nature very skeptical, I must admit the apartment air is much cleaner and fresher since I got the Sharp. Highly recommended.

3Not quiet at all
By Ike Rye
Sharp is known for being the market leader in making quiet air purifiers. Unfortunately this FP-A40U is not quiet at all on settings that are needed (MED/HIGH) for manufacturer's stated efficacy. If you are planning on running it quietly at LOW setting be sure that your room is 80sq.ft or less to keep it effective (5 air changes per hour).Functionally, the unit is easy to use and to change filters.Missing on this model is a way to turn off the bright lights of the control panel. The prefilter is just a perforated plastic backdoor laced with antistatic mesh (i.e. cost saving for Sharp, headache for the owner). Also keep in mind that this unit sucks air from behind and cannot be too close to the wall. One more thing, it appears that A40 model is an older A30 model with more powerful motor. That explains uncharacteristic, for Sharp brand, loudness.EDIT: not even a month into use the charcoal started emit slight smell. The smell is very faint and goes away when charcoal filter is removed. That in itself is not bad since filter's life varies depending on environment but I have not found replacement charcoal filter for a reasonable price yet. On a positive note - I started using the 3rd speed as a white noise generator to drown street noise with good result and got pretty much used to 2nd speed loudness.
