Holmes Air Purifier

The previous reviews of this product are pretty accurate.The issue of the rattling fan is true (I have proven to myself that it is the fan - my first guess is the use of sleeve instead of ball bearings, and the fan may be a bit underpowered to draw the air through the HEPA filters). Right out of the box it didn't have the rattling sound, but after just about 10 hours of running, there it was. Because of this, I would agree that putting it right in a bedroom would not be the thing to do. I don't have it right in the bedroom, and I do have a white noise generator on the headboard, so I don't notice that little rattling noise at night; and during the day it makes no difference to me anyway since I can't really hear it unless I am within about 10 feet of the unit.I like the ability to turn the ionizer on and off. I use the medium speed setting of the fan, as the high setting does result in noticeably higher fan noise (the rattling seems to stay at about the same level).I will get a much better feel for how it works as far as "cleaning the air" this winter, as we tend to open doors and windows in the evenings and mornings in the summer; which of course rather defeats the whole purpose of the machine. None the less, we kept the doors and windows closed for about a seven day period, and both I and my wife felt that we did notice some difference in air quality.Considering the price, the washable pre-filter, and the cleanable HEPA filters, I think the unit is a relatively good value.

CADR ratings looking good...but the rattle is too much!

This is the 4th air purifier I've purchased for my home over the past 6 years. The one in our bedroom was getting a little rickety and had to be replaced. So we grabbed one of these tonight at Target, based on the CADR rating of 110 for pollen, dust, and tobacco smoke. The HEPA-Type filter that doesn't need to be replaced (just cleaned) also sounded like a reasonable deal for $105 bucks.Notice the one on Amazon is only $89.79 so I should have bought it on Amazon in the first place. We live and learn. Had I bought it here I would have seen reviews about the rattling fan, and would have likely bought something else with better reviews.On the loudest/highest speed the rattle or helicopter sound isn't really detectable. But turn the unit down to medium or low speed and it's impossible not to focus on the sound. Because I mainly use mine as white noise to help this insomniac sleep, the rattle is unbearable and the Holmes Air Purifier is already packed back in the box ready to be promptly returned in the morning. I figure if it rattles like this now, how much worse will it be in 3 - 12 months from now? It's really that irritating.

I purchased this air purifier when my infant son began having serious outdoor allergies. I found a huge improvement in him after using this purifier in his room and through out our small apartment at the time. It is pretty loud (even the lowest setting is pretty loud) But I have had no problems with the loudness since it is in his room only and works great as "white noise" for children. It also works great to drown out outside noise from his bedroom at night time. The light is very bright, so I've covered it with tape from time to time.
