Impressive Air Purifier Ruined by Cheap Plastic

I need a powerful air purifier to help me deal with my severe allergies. I have experimented with many different air purifiers, including large HEPA types, and electrostatic types, like the OreckXL. What drew me to the Airgenius is the fact that it is electrostatic, yet certified to deliver HEPA-like performance. Traditional HEPA air purifiers force air through a thick HEPA filter, which creates noise, consumes a lot of energy, and produces heat. If I leave my large HEPA air purifier running at full speed, it consumes 150W and noticeably heats up the room. Electrostatic air cleaners push air through an electric field that does not otherwise impede airflow. Unfortunately, what sounds good in theory, rarely works in practice. That's why the ionic breeze or OreckXL are not certified to deliver any clean air, and from my experience, they don't. Enter the Airgenius, which promises the best of both worlds.The Airgenius 3 offers an unparalleled clean air delivery rate (CADR)of 160 for pollen, which leaves other devices of this size in the dust. Just for comparison, other common HEPA tower-type air purifiers have a CADR for pollen in the 45-80 range. Indeed, the Airgenius blows out a lot of air. It not only looks like a tower fan, but thanks to its massive air output and oscillation, it can easily be used as a one. The thick honeycomb filter seems to eliminate air turbulence, which greatly reduces wind noise generated by ordinary fans. As such, the Airgenius is the first air purifier I have used that not only promises quiet operation but is in fact quiet.Unfortunately, these great features are somewhat spoiled by the cheap materials used. The Airgenius is made from the same cheap, flimsy, dull, and smelly plastic as a $20 tower fan. At this price point, I would have expected a more premium feel. This was especially disappointing as the unit promises to remove VOC's from the air. Instead, it seems to spew out VOC's emitted by the cheap plastic. I expected some "new smell", but this thing made my whole apartment smell like cheap plastic. I ran it on high for almost a week and the smell did not go away. Speaking of cheap - the two fans built into this unit don't seem to be of great quality either. While the the upper fan operates normally and inaudibly, the lower fan emits a slight grinding/whining noise. It is not particularly bothersome, but makes you wonder if it will get worse over time.The user manual states that the unit is expected to last 5 years, at which point the electrostatic filter wears out. The filter is washable, but KAZ does not seem to sell replacements. The unit (but not the electrostatic filter) is backed by a 5-year warranty, but you must mail the unit in at your own expense. For such a large appliance, that's not very useful. Overall, this is an OK air purifier with impressive specs, but I am returning it because of the strong plastic odor and the uncertainty of whether the lower fan's grinding noise, as slight as it is now, will lead to a future failure.

Looks Beautiful, great air flow, but had an electrical problem.

I really liked how this unit looks, it's classy and refined. However, plugging it in, you could hear the motor buzzing in a short-circuity kind of way. It still 'ran', but didn't sound right. Even at low fan speed the buzzing was noticable.Just as alarming, it had a very strong plasticy smell which then quickly turned into an electrical smell.Giving it the benefit of the doubt that this was just a burn-in process and it would go away, I ran it for 24 hours.The buzz and smells did not go away.This is in a baby's room so I did not feel comfortable leaving it there, especially when it was contributing to air pollution instead of removing it.Exchanged it for a different model.

AirGenius 3 is solid - But if you are considering the AirGenius, better to pay a little more for the AirGenius 4 & 5

The AirGenius 3 is solid. There aren't many air purifiers out there that oscillate, but the Honeywell AirGenius series does. To me, that is a uncommon feature that is valuable and gives it an edge against other air purifiers. In addition to the oscillation, both the carbon and HEPA filters are washable. It comes with easy to follow instructions and the process seems painless. These two features (oscilation & washable filters) make the AirGenius series distinguishable and a worthy consideration for an air purifier. In summary, I love the Honeywell AirGenius3's stylish design, button layout, washable filters (HEPA & Carbon), and noise level on the lowest setting. Though I like the AirGenius 3, I feel that the AirGenius 4 and 5's extra features are much more worth it.I will discuss that later in this review.Features at a glance1) Washable filters - carbon filter and hepa filter. Comes with an extra carbon filter.2) Three settings - low, medium, high (Honeywell calls it sleep, general, and max)3) Designed to be used up to 225 sq. feet Some Thoughts:- Lowest mode is very quiet and can be used during sleep. It's also good to use as white noise- Stylish design. Love the button layout on the top of the tower. The font and the numbers are very flattering. The grill has an interesting 4,3,4,3 pattern, offsetting like bricks. It might just be my odd observation, but the grill definitely stands out from other purifiers I've used. It's not just a boring straight line pattern. It's definitely something to proudly place in your living room, bedroom, office, etc. It's nice to look at, if you will.- Washable filters. Though I wouldn't rule against buying another Hepa filter eventually, it's nice to know that this air purifier has the capability to save you money.- Energy star rated. Peace of mind.Should I get the AirGenius3, 4, or 5?The AirGenius 3 seems very basic compared to the AirGenius 4 and 5. In my opinion, if you're already paying a relatively luxurious amount for an air purifier ($160 - $170), I would pay a little more for the 4 and 5.If you're okay with the solid cleaning power, oscillation, washable filters, and three modes, the AirGenius 3 is all you need.If you want the automatic shut-off timer and the aforementioned features, go with the Airgenius 4. I'm one of those people who value a shut-off timer because of very specific reasons. One of those reasons is when I'm not home, I like to put the purifier on the highest setting for 2 hours for a nice "cleansing."If you want more settings (allergen and germ, which the Airgenius 3 does not have) and touch screen controls, the AirGenius 5 has it all. It's the complete package and completely luxurious. The pricing of the AirGenius 5 compared to the 3 isn't that much of a difference.ConclusionHoneywell did a great job designing the AirGenius series. The AirGenius 3 stands out with the oscillation and washable carbon and hepa filters. It is stylish and has solid cleaning power. If you already like the AirGenius 3, consider the 4 and 5 as well. A very worthy option to consider. Excellent design and functionality. Highly recommended
