Good buy

The manufacturer of my air purifier is out of business, and finding bulk carbon to replace has been difficult. Reasonable shipping costs motivated me to buy this, basically generic, product, making it an economical choice for me, in Canada.

Dusty stuff

I got the 20 Lb quantity. It came in a square box with a bag inside that was bread twist tied closed. I used my carbon filtered water from my sink and all my stainles kitchen stuff to rinse and dry in the oven at 300F. Pour the stuff out of the bag ouside and hold yer breath or wear a mask as a black cloud of carbon will invelope your face while you pour, other than that it tastes ok. Makes a hissing noise when wet.Im going to use it to replace the carbon in my IQair filter when it needs it.Makes a mess but washes off with soap no problem.

O.K. people, for those that don't know, this is what they use in building and hospitals. Ever wonder how they smell so clean but the windows either don't open or are usually closed? They use these in their air exchanger and ventilation systems.I'm a smoker and these are the best air purifier smell eliminator you can find, good price to~!! Far cheaper then the fiberglass filters with carbon embedded and far more effective as well. I use 1-2 pounds in my air purifier and they absorb odors for around a year~!! That's 10 years for $70 bucks~!!! Far better and cheaper then buying the carbon impregnated prefilters that only last 3 months, if that.I use fine mesh zippered bags that they use for swimming pool vacuum filters (bought on Ebay). I lay the purifier on its back and lay a cheap prefilter over the HEPA. I then put a reasonable amount of these pellets in a mesh bag (1-2 pounds) and lay it flat over the prefilter and spread the pellets out evenly. I then put another used pre-filter over that and then an air conditioner filter over that. I sandwich them all together and secure with velcro. I then put the air purifiers grill back on and stand it up, done.You'll have to experiment with the amount of prefilters and pellets you use. Depending on your purifier, the space between the grill and the HEPA will be different and if you don't fill that space enough, these pellets will fall to the bottom when you stand it up. I use these with all 4 of my different sized purifiers that I use in my house and it works for all of them. You'll just need to experiment with the quanities of materials you use so the pellets stay evenly spread out when you stand the purifier in the upright position.========================================================================Here's what I use for a pre-prefilter and to fill the space in between the HEPA and the grill. They're a 1/4 inch thick, very porus and sponge like. They wash well and can be used over and over again. They're very good at picking up the large particles and very resilent with washing in the sink and ringing the water out of them.Duck Brand 1285234 24-Inch by 15-Inch by 1/4-Inch Foam Air Conditioner Filter========================================================================I use this as a prefilter to collect finer dust particles that gets past the pre-prefilter and to take up space in between the grill and the HEPA. They're not as porus and more rigid. I use a used one here and a new one on the other side of the pellets to take up space and to prevent any visible dust from making it to the HEPA. I'd imagine you could use regular spun fiberglass but I got a really good deal on a large quanity of these.You get two 16X48 inch sheets. Just cut to fit them to size. I suggest stocking up. It only cost .49 cents more for each additional 2 pack in shipping cost. That brings it down to $3.25 for each sheet. You could likely get away with 1 sheet a year per air purfier using my system.Honeywell Replacement Activated Carbon Pre-filter (2 Pack) (2*38002)=========================================================================You should change/rotate and/or clean the pre-filters every 3 months. These pellets will last a year..... Every 3 months, just submerge the mesh bag in water and shake the pellets around to shakeoff the used/depleted outer parts of the coal to fasilitate a renewed surface area of absorption. I use between 1 and 2 pounds in all 4 of my air purifier. I prefer to keep them on low to prevent sound pollution. Even in my case, these will last over 3 years and only cost $20 a year.Pro-rated, my system should cost around $10.00 a year per air purifier. That's cheap considering the high cost of the good quality carbon impregnated prefilters.... not to mention the additional pre-filters will increase the life of your expensive HEPA's...... and lets not forget this is far superior~!!In closing, I was contemplating buying a $1,000+ air purifier but decided using cheaper units and making them into hybrids was the way to go. First, I can keep them on low and use them throughout the house. Second, maintenence cost is far less..... those "super" air cleaners don't last as long, are louder and the filters are $200+ each! If you're serious about clean air and don't want the sound polution, this is the way to go..... unless of course you're loaded..... Oh, and the bonus is I only have to dust maybe twice a year!!
