Power Miser, and Quiet

My review is on three things- power use, audibility, and the ionizing feature.Measurements of power consumption:Quiet mode: 3 wattsMedium: 8 wattsHigh: 16 wattsBased on this I'd say the device deserves its energy star rating.Noise:The quiet mode is almost imperceptible in a room with some other background noise (traffic, wind), the medium level is far quieter than the low speed mode of some cheaper filters (Holmes,Honeywell) that I've used. The high mode is similar in noise level to a medium setting on a cheap filter, perhaps a little quieter.The quality of the noise is very uniform. I only hear some variation in sound on the quiet mode, the fan seems to rub against something on every cycle. This will likely go away with use.The ionizer makes a steady on-off very high pitched (probably not audible to older ears) noise sometimes and very little at others. This may have to do with humidity. It can be turned off.Ionizer/Plasma Cluster:Running this in an empty room for a few minutes and entering the room I notice a very big difference. The air feels very close to the "after a storm" feeling. Their web site explains how this technology works if you want the details, but it definitely alters the "feel" of the air in the room in a significant way.Misc:The blue light on the front is way too bright, as with most appliances these days. I guess you can put a sticker on it or color it with a black permanent marker to dampen that down. That's my only dislike so far.Its design is such that you might assume you could mount this on a wall. Not so. It is for floor use only as far as I can tell.

The Air Purifier Value Sweet Spot

We run 3 Hunter Permalife 30756 purifiers in the house - but not for much longer. After going over the deep end researching air purifiers, I tried out the Sharp FP-P30U after one of the Hunters died. Its been less than a week and I just ordered two more. The Hunter's will be posted to craigslist shortly. The Sharp is a great deal in terms of cost, doing its job, energy efficiency, design, filter life, and relative silence. The only significant downside is that the filters do cost about $90 when they are supposed to be replaced every 2 years. However, $45/year for filter costs isn't bad compared to the larger A60 and A80 models which have filter costs of about $135/year.Minor downsides are that the blue "plasmacluster" indicator light is too bright. If you keep the ion generator on at night you won't need a night light in the room. If it's too bright, however, it is easy to cover this light up with tape. Also, at low fan speed the air purifier is so quiet you can hear a faint, rhythmic, whirring, crackle from the ion generator. This is a faint sound, it is not disturbing, and it's not the loud popping you hear from arcing. I don't hear it because I sleep 10' from the air purifier. I only hear it when I listen for it up close up. At medium fan speed, the fan noise supersedes the ion generator. I have no problem with either of these minor downsides.With regards to energy efficiency, the Sharp only draws 4 watts at low speed; 9 watts at medium; and 18 watts at high. The Hunters use 43 watts at low; 55 at medium; and 80 at high. Air flow at each fan speed is similar between the Sharp and the Hunters. Based on our household use (about 10 hours a night and tier 3 energy pricing at .2994 per kilowatt hour, the Sharp will annually save us about $40 per air purifier. Almost enough to pay for the purifiers and keep up with filter replacements. I'm sold and I feel strongly I am getting a better purifier.I also appreciate that I can easily install a generic 'cut to fit' carbon pre-filter between the washable mesh pre-filter and the genuine Sharp charcoal pre-filter. We usually change these every 3 months - they collect a lot of dust in that time. I'm not shooting to extend the filter life but it would be good to get the full 2 years.These are a very nice value proposition unless you are set on buying something made by the Swiss or Austin Air.

Clean and Quiet

Purchased this air purifier for my bedroom and I am very satisfied with it's performance. It is very quiet, the low mode only makes a low hum. It also creates a slight breeze, which is great in the summer time. My bed room used to be very dusty. After just a few days I would see dust on the furniture. I've owned the Sharp FP P30U for a month now, and have not needed to dust. I also think the air smells cleaner in the bedroom. I would recommend this product.
