Harmonics?

I received my Winix today, so this is my initial rating and impression.Like:- Easy to set up- Has a remote- Looks nice- VERY quiet on low speed- Moves a lot of air on TurboDislike:- Cannot shut off Plasmawave- 3-Stage Filtration vs. 5-Stage in other Winix models- High and Turbo modes produce a VERY noticable "whistling" noiseTo elaborate on my dislikes. Since this unit had a remote, I was hoping that they preserved the on/off feature from other Winix units for the Plasmawave. No such luck. This was a bit of a disappointment but not a deal breaker in and of itself. However, this brings me to my second issue.Turning this on High or Turbo produces a very noticeable whistling or whine. This noise is NOT the Plasmawave (that has a distinct chirping noise and is surprisingly hard to detect); it almost sounds like a bad fan or harmonics from moving so much air. Looking at the unit at max settings, there is a slight vibration which makes me suspect that the fan is unbalanced.I will let it run for a day or two and see if it goes away on its own... but I suspect that I may have to return the unit for another. I didn't see this noise mentioned in any of the other reviews, so I'll keep my fingers crossed.[UPDATE: 03/26/2013]I received a second unit and it demonstrated the same high pitched noise. I tried to ignore it, but it's been driving both me and my wife crazy. The fan also pulsates (doesn't maintain constant revolutions at a given speed), adding to the annoyance. I don't know if I received two lemons, but ended up buying the Winix WAC9500 Ultimate Pet. So far the WAC9500 is awesome.Hope this helps someone.

Takes up a bit of space, but works well and is very quiet

We had an older air filter to compare against, and the Winix wins.It's amazing. It's larger so it can process more air more quickly, yet it's quiet in it's operation. The older air filter we had made a funny noise as it cleaned the air. It was similar with carbon, Hepa, and a similar "plasma wave" cleaner, so it's amazing to see the Winix be bigger yet quiet.Another great feature is that you can turn off the lights in the room the air cleaner is in and it goes into an ultra-quiet mode.It comes with a remote which is not entirely necessary, but it is handy and very sleek.The controls are also sleek. Feels like they're from the Starship Enterprise. Auto-mode makes it easy to use.It also comes with 3 extra carbon filters which is very handy.If you want a good laugh, open the instruction manual, and there are little illustrations of all the ways...well not all, but many...different ways that you should not use the air filter.Overall, it's fantastic, the only drawback si that it's big, and if you place it 24 inches from a wall which is recommended, it takes up quite a bit of space in the room, so just be aware of that.

We are so glad we got this! I could tell right away that it makes a difference. We have dogs and cats and live on a dusty road and I've worried about the air quality in our house for a long time now. The Winix is excellent quality and solidly built. It is easy to change filters and comes with 4 of them. It also comes with a remote. I am the kind of person that does not like any humming sounds like a fan. The Winix is quiet - not irritating at all. Best of all, it has made my allergies better!
