5Expensive but effective
By jessdel
I am allergic to cats, so naturally I adopted two and I'm about to get a third. I was STRUGGLING with my allergies so started looking into air purifiers and found that Honeywell consistently had good reviews. This was a very new model at the time I purchased and I was a bit nervous about being a guinea pig but my allergies clicked the purchase button for me.I had to return the first unit because it started making a strange cyclic humming sound, kind of like the motor was getting tired - I'd only had it for about two weeks. Amazon Return Center is amazing and I had a replacement unit in two days. The second unit is great, I've had no problems so far. It's whisper-quiet (unless you crank it up to its highest setting, which isn't necessary) and I really notice a difference in the quality of the air. If I turn it off, I start getting the sniffles and itchy eyes in no time. I don't use the UV feature, but I do like the ionizer.***UPDATE*** Unfortunately I've also had to arrange for the second unit to be returned, this time I contacted Honeywell directly. The purifier has been getting progressively more noisy and it sounds like the motor is straining. I'm really surprised because I have a couple of cheaper Honeywell units that have been on 24/7 for almost the last year and I have had absolutely no problems with them. I just don't think this unit is ready for the market yet. Honeywell customer service has been excellent, they were responsive and are going to exchange the purifier for one of their higher models at no charge. I think I might try the Rabbit Air purifier if the next unit I receive is not satisfactory. SIGH!

4Works well but filters hard to find
By David S. Midler
This air purifier does a great job and has a very modern look. I also like that it provides hepa, ion and traditional filtration all in one unit. You have a choice of using the included washable filter or a replaceable odor blocking filter. I find that the odor blocking filter is the way to go, but ordering additional filters is a real pain. There is a web site and part number on the filter bag but it only comes up with "search not found." I have not found these filters available anywhere but from the manufacturer and since their web site doesn't work, be prepared to sit on the phone placing your order.

2Honeywell Price without the Honeywell Quality
By Rabbit Won
Pros:Quieter than the Hamilton Beach 04163 it replacedEasy to Replace Filters and BulbsCan be lifted with one hand (great feature for vacuuming)Cons:Not as many features as I expected for the priceCirculates air close to the floor (great for those who spend a lot of time on the floor, but not the rest of us)Appears to have a poor build quality compared to other Honeywell purifiersUntil acquired by Allied Signal, Honeywell was a home-town company for me, so I really wanted to see this product live up to its brand name; unfortunately, that didn't happen.I purchased this item to replace the discontinued Hamilton Beach 04163, for which parts are becoming scarce. I have friends who own the Honeywell 50250 and swear by it, so I was happy to find a Honeywell model with most of the features I wanted at a price I could afford.I ended up sending this item back and ordering a different brand for two main reasons:1. Although not noted in any of the advertising, I had hoped for the price the item would have an air quality sensor that automatically adjusts fan speed accordingly when it senses particles or odors. I paid less than $150 for the Hamilton Beach 04163 and in addition to the same three types of filtration, the Hamilton Beach also had an LCD that visually displayed air quality and an automatic mode to increase fan speed temporarily when the unit sensed increased particles or odors. Having a "set it and forget it" feature on an air purifier is like having a car with heated seats during the winter; if you've never had the feature it doesn't seem worth the money, but once you've used the feature you wonder how you ever lived without it.2. My unit came broken out of the box; from the minute it was plugged in, the motor would "sag and surge" once every few minutes as if a high wattage appliance had just been turned on. In addition, the unit produced a very high level of electrical noise. At first I assumed both these problems may have been caused by outdated wiring, so I plugged the unit into my sensitive electronics surge protector, which in addition to protecting from power spikes and surges, includes a line conditioner to make sure devices are receiving a consistent and proper amount of power; this did not correct either problem. I also experienced the "plastic smell" noted by other reviewers. One good thing I didn't notice that other reviewers complained about was noise. In fact, because of so many noise complaints on almost every brand of air purifier, I decided to unscientifically compare sound levels by installing a Volume Unit Meter app on my iPad. With the units turned off, the app registered a baseline room volume of 39 decibels. On its lowest speed the Honeywell unit only produced 51 decibels as compared to the Hamilton Beach at 60 decibels on its lowest "Whisper Clean" speed. At the highest levels, the Honeywell unit produced 70 decibels while the Hamilton Beach was slightly louder at 72 decibels. Unfortunately, I found the Honeywell unit's high level of electrical noise to be so annoying on the lowest speed, that during its two days of operation I kept it at speed level six out of twelve, which matched the white noise created by the Hamilton Beach at its "Whisper Clean" speed. It should also be noted that in order for any air purifier to circulate air it needs some sort of fan or blower, and as with a typical household furnace, the more air the fan or blower circulates, the more white noise it produces. I have to assume most noise complaints on all brands of air purifiers aren't due to the noise, but rather to the promises of quiet that never comes true; as in the case of the Hamilton Beach's 60 decibel "Whisper Clean". Sixty decibels is by no means close to the actual sound level of a whisper. Unfortunately this is how products are currently allowed to be marketed; at least in the United States. The only truly quiet air purifier is the one that is broken or turned off.One bad thing that I didn't see other reviewers comment on was the air circulation pattern. As noted in my list of cons, the Honeywell unit circulates cleaned air around the floor and not much higher. This is by no means the fault of the Honeywell unit; this fault can be attributed to the "tower" design itself. Although not nearly as attractive, the "box" design is much more effective at circulating air to levels where people actually breathe at than tower units are. Personally, I'll take the function of an ugly box unit that intakes dirty air from a low level and expels cleaned air at a higher level any day of the week over the stylish form of a tower unit that both takes air in from and releases it near the floor.I case you're wondering, I decided to go with the Rabbit Air BioGS (model 421A - covers 600 sq. ft.) High Quality Ultra-Quiet Air Purifier - Low Maintenance - Washable Filters!; although approximately $130 more than the Honeywell unit, it has my "must have" air quality sensor with automatic odor and particle response, as well as more levels of filtration. It's also a box unit I find more stylish than the plastic finish Honeywell unit. To make up for the lack of a UV bulb, I spent $50 and also bought a Germ Guardian GG-1000 UV-C Air Sanitizer, which I plan to plugin next to the Rabbit Air in order to take advantage of its more powerful circulation. For those looking to stay around or below the $200 range, I would look at the Winix PlasmaWave 5300 Air Cleaner Model, which for $50 less than the Honeywell unit has the automatic air quality adjustment I've come to love and highly recommend. I also recommend doing more research. A great resource is Air-Purifier-Power.com; the author gives the most meticulous reviews of all types of air purifiers. In the end, the only reason I gave the Honeywell HHT-145 two stars instead of one is because I didn't want to risk having to return another defective unit to Amazon.
