This filter is very, very quiet, especially in "sleep" mode. You don't hear any mechanical parts when it is running. With the Winix on during the night, I wake up without having to blow my nose, coughing to clean my throat, and no sneezing. During the day, I use it when it is needed, especially during allergy seasons. Replacing the filter is snap simple: lightly snap out the front control panel at the lower sides then lift up and off the unit to pull out the filters (HEPA and the charcoal sheet) and pop in new ones. Depending on use, you might only have to replace the charcoal sheet several times before the HEPA. The HEPA filters are a bit expensive; mine lasts about a year (different for others), so a penny a day, I could buy three filters a year, if I needed. Not bad considering the relief it gives me and the saving in not having to rely on over-the-counter allergy medications. This is by far the best air filter I have owned. It is quiet and continues to be so. The only annoying noise after months of use was a hissing sound that I first thought was caused by the fan but upon inspection I realize it was coming from the ozone rods (I think that's what the rods are): looking from the front, there are two small needle tips sensors each surrounded by small round plastic casing in the back upper left corner below the vent grill. The dry air was causing the sensor to be electrically charged as micro-particles interact with the needles (this is my educated guess). I took a Q-tip slightly damped with water, bent it slightly at the tip and dabbed the two sensors (the pointed/needle rods in the center of the round plastic casing) to clean and remove whatever was stuck to them and the noise disappeared. I would repeat this whenever the hissing occurs; I don't have to do this often, twice a year for me. I have tried almost all other air filters under $200.00 and the Winix is the best in this price range.
