The Black&Decker HEPAFresh Air Cleaner tower is designed to help improve the quality of air in your home by reducing allergens and odors. The multi-layer filter captures up to 99% of airborne particles, such as dust mites, pollens, mold spores and pet dander; while the carbon layer reduces common smoke, cooking and pet odors. It is designed with a pre-layer to capture large dust particles, extending the life of the filter. The 22" tower is effective for filtering the air in medium sized rooms and offers 3 fan speeds depending on your needs.

Simple & Effective -No Great Surprises

The Black and Decker Hepa Fresh Air Cleaner shouldn't cause you any "Wow moments" but that can be a good thing in this age of super high tech - touch command world. It's a lightweight-3settings-Air Cleaner that runs quietly and effectively.Taking it out of the box to the floor requires the removal of the styrofoam shipping protection and the plastic covering (there's a teeny bit of irony in the fact that the "odor remover has an odor" - It's just the smell of new plastic and seriously a non-issue but fun to mention for the sake of being able to use the word "Irony" correctly).The directions show an extra liner of plastic on the filter but there was none on my filter. The directions also draw the Pre/Charcoal filter as being about 1/3 as thick as the Hepa Filter and they write about it in what I think is a misleading way(page E-5 in the manual). This "Pre-/Charcoal Filter" as they call it is simply a thin, very thin, layer of foamy like substance (I'll take their word for it about the Charcoal) that uses a velcro-like strip at the top to attach to the HEPA. Then they number the filters like this:1. Pre-Filter combined with2. Charcoal Filter3. Hepa FilterSo I was looking for a 3rd item. You can stop looking. It's that thin foamy thing that they're "wordsmithing' to sound more important that it looks. And believe me, it doesn't look like much.The controls are manual, with a Lo, Med, and Hi ability that when turned, light up the rather LONG green power light. I checked to see if the light was tied to the filter as an alert but it isn't, It's just a power light.The Pre-/Charcoal filter gets a Vacuuming every month (according to the directions) and the HEPA they suggest to buy a new one when it is Grey or Black and no longer white.Overall, it's a surprisingly simple but effective machine from Black and Decker that carries a generous 3 year warranty and a fairly high price. It took the bacon smell, left from my ravenous nephew, from the kitchen in about 10 minutes on hight; That was impressive.For the quality, simple design and the fact that B&D will potentially be making money from the filter "Re-purchase" I thought the price (even the Amazon price) was a bit high. But that's just a consumer opinion based on my personal finances. If you have a room that needs dander and smell gone in a relatively fast and quiet way, this unit could work for you!

I can't call this an "air purifier" because it doesn't have the technology which air purifiers have, it's just an extremely good air *filter*.The construction is excellent. There is no flimsy plastic feel. It's a solid unit and it feels like it will hold up to years of usage.It has one very simple control to adjust the speed of the fan. On the lowest setting it is reasonably quiet and yet moves plenty of air - perfect for filtering the air in a normal sized bedroom. One flaw for bedroom usage is the very bright power light. If you want to get your melatonin (by sleeping in the dark), then you might not want to sleep with this bright light.The higher settings become quite loud (and obviously blow more air).The filter is very easy to remove for cleaning or replacement.When you first take it out of the box and turn it on there is a very distinct smell which I'd describe as something like a "new car smell" (plastic?). I doubt any odor that strong is "healthy" but it quickly goes away.

Think you could find something better

I have used air purifiers for over 20 years. However, this is supposed to be an air cleaner, I do not know the difference. I do know that in the past I would only buy air purifiers that had HEPA filters; they seem to be the best at filtering out the worst particles in the air. I used to only buy Holmes air purifiers as I thought they were the best as well.Setting this up literally takes less time than getting it out of the box. Once out, you just plug it in. The filters are already in place and ready to go. There are three settings, low, medium, and high. I have had it in my bedroom since I received it. It is to be used in a room up to 155 square feet. Granted, my bedroom is bigger but it is the only room that I keep the door closed at all times which they recommend when using the unit.Quality wise, it feels cheap in my hands, I was not impressed with how it is made. It is rather light and feels cheap. I have been using it for weeks and can't say I have noticed a difference in the quality of air other than a slight difference in odors being removed more quickly. However, since having this is my bedroom the timing was bad because I had an upper respiratory infection and this did not seem to help it at all. In fact, I am wondering if I this contributed to it. I have not had one (infection) in over ten years and suddenly had one once I placed this in my bedroom. I am going to chalk it up to bad timing though.People have complained about the light and I must say as someone who is very sensitive to light when I sleep, it does not bother me. I guess it depends on where you place the unit. I sleep in a darkened room because any sunlight will keep me up. The light is big but it is not bright at all. Also, all settings of the unit at not that loud. I have had it set at medium and there is a low hum in the room, nothing significant. The high is just slightly louder and still not enough to bother me. It is like a very soft white noise.I personally am not impressed with this unit. I know Black and Decker makes great products and again, HEPA is the best filters, but I would not buy this and think for the money you could find something better for the price range. I will use it until the filters need to be replaced which they recommend 6-8 depending on use.
