Does the job. Good if you're on a budget.

Pros: Real HEPA air purifiers are expensive, and if you're on a budget this will do the job. If you have bad allergies, you need HEPA -- not "HEPA-like" or "90% HEPA" or other essentially false categorizations. (Those are just scummy ways for marketers to slap the word "HEPA" onto products to which it doesn't apply.) The Holmes HAP8615 is a real HEPA device at a low price.It's small and versatile. You can place it up against the wall. You can stand it up or put it on its side.Cons: As others have pointed out, this machine is loud. I have it on 3 out of 4 and it's making quite a racket. Even at 1 it's definitely audible; I wouldn't want to have this going while watching TV for example. It's also not a flat "white" noise. It sort of flutters, so rather than "fffffffffffffffffffffff" you get "fufffufuffffffuffufffffffufuf".That being said, I'm running it in my office right now, and I'd much rather have some noise than be sneezing every five seconds (literally -- what a bad spring we've been having!) I guess it depends on what clean air is worth to you.Actually, I take back what I said about white noise. It's doing a nice job of blotting out background noises, and I can concentrate.

Yes, it's loud, even on the lowest setting, yet does the trick when on a budget. I sleep fine with it. In the first few hours, I closed the door and let it run on high. When I entered, I didn't notice "fresh + clear air" as is usually described w/Hepa air filters (nor did I notice it w/much more expensive units). Too soon to tell how much it's helping, though laying in bed at night, I do notice the air I'm breathing seems fresh, and upon waking I feel much "clearer". I don't keep the door completely closed and it's fine. I do open my windows during the day as I love our cool breezes. I'd give it 5 stars if it was quieter.

I was surprised to find that the major complaints about this machine are the noise. Since the reason we buy it is because of the white noise. In the winter, when the AC is packed away, we miss that sound, and this device cleans the air and provides the comforting fan noise that lulls us to sleep. It really screens out any other noises through the apartment walls (sirens, car alarms and big trucks going by can be a problem at night), and is very easy to operate.Also, unlike some other Holmes devices, it takes the very standard rectangular HEPA filter that most stores carry, and only uses one at a time. You have to replace the carbon filters often (our house is very dusty), but they're cheap. The more pricey HEPAs last all winter, usually.There are 4 settings, so when away you can run it at the top for quick air cleansing, and then turn it down if you want it quieter when you come in. It's easy to aim and position, having two resting positions. I really think the noise can be explained by the powerful engine.We did have one give out after 4 years, but it was pretty constantly used, and the new one has a 5 year warranty.
