quiet and efficient

This AP250 is well put together, efficient, and ideal for a 320 sq foot or smaller room. It has very simple controls, 3 speeds and off, and it arrived ready to go -- no need to do any set up, just plug it in and enjoy. Best of all, it's extremely quiet. On low, it's barely audible, on medium, it has a pleasant low pitched hum that serves nicely as white noise, and even on high, the fan is considerably louder, but not annoying or shrill. I've tried much smaller units that were so loud it was impossible to sleep, watch tv, etc, while they were on... so this one is a keeper. The fan is powerful and it blows air straight up to circulate (supposedly it will clean the room air about 5x an hour). The back of the unit is flat, so it can be put flush against the wall. I'm trying to find out if it's ok to run it in a horizontal position with the air blowing out vs up, but until I confirm that, I'm leaving it on the floor. The only negatives I've found so far are that it's quite large-- bulkier than expected-- so it can't be used on a table easily, but it's not too heavy to move around. The 3 prong cord is a bit shorter than I'd like, so you are limited to placing it in a location a few feet from a wall socket. (they say you are not supposed to use an extension cord). It does require replacement pre-filters and True Hepa filters, which could get costly.Otherwise, I've had it running full time for a few days and I'm very pleased with the results. Dust is starting to accumulate, and the air feels fresh, despite my neighbor's not so great cooking! In case you're wondering, there is no ionizer feature in this unit ... probably just as well, given recent negative reports about ionizers. ABT delivery was fast. Very pleased .

Cheap alternative to buying new filters

I bought this purifier a few months ago for my daughter's room. She has a smallish room with also 3 smallish birds residing with her. They produce a lot of dust and feathers. My daughter has allergies, which we thought were from the birds, but now know it's probably a variety of factors. The air purifier has NOT helped with these, BUT it has taken a lot of airborne particles out of the air of which I am very thankful for.I do wish it were quieter. We only run it on low as the other speeds are VERY loud (strange that another reviewer says it's so quiet...odd). I think any filter that moves as much air as these Whirlpool ones do, is going to be loud. My daughter can sleep with the lowest setting so that is a blessing. Lots of air flows through these machines so if you have long hair, it's fun to put your head over the top and let your 'stand on end'. We did have a bit of a hard time finding a good spot in her room.Regarding the filters, every other week I have been opening the unit and vacuuming the pre-filter. These black filters are almost pure white in only 2 weeks. The vacuum hose takes everything off so the pre-filter looks almost like new.There is an indicator on the top of the unit that flashes when a new pre-filter is needed (and one for the HEPA). The other day, the pre-filter light started flashing (it had never done this before). I took off the cover, realizing that I had forgotten to vacuum it the past couple of weeks. It was loaded and the HEPA one also had a bit of dust around the edges. I vacuumed both of them this time, being very careful with the HEPA filter. They turned out great!The procedure to get the light to quit flashing is as follows: Unplug the machine, clean the filters, put them back in, plug the unit back in, turn on the machine, hold down the reset button for 5 seconds, and said light stops flashing. (It won't stop if you skip the unplugging part.)Even if this voids the warranty, I feel it's worth it to save $ on new filters. With the cost of those over time, I can just buy another unit if needed in the future. This is a good quality product so I'm hoping it will be fine for some time to come. So far, so good.EDIT: I might discontinue this procedure. I am concerned about the carbon being dislodged by this method. Not sure if this is happening or if it's a problem, but I'm just going to start buying the filters in the 4 pack and replace every month. I just got some new ones and they sure do look WAY better than the one I had in there for over a year. :-)

I wake up with a headache when my allergies attack, and using this in the bedroom helps prevent the headaches and stuffiness. The only problem I wish I'd known about before buying it is it throws off a steady stream of cold air. Maybe they all do--I don't know-- but it makes the room feel drafty in the winter. That's my only complaint. I would try others in a store before buying another of these.
